If you’re a motorcycle rider, there is nothing quite like the feel of the wind blowing past you as you take a carefree drive down a freeway or road. While many motorists pay close attention to motorcycles, others may have a hard time seeing you, increasing your chances of being injured.

During an average year in New York, there are 141 deaths related to motorcycles, and the most at-risk demographic is males aged 20-44. In order to keep yourself safe on the road, you must be more visible to other motorists and aware of your surroundings.

1. Use reflective devices.

Motorcyclists, like bicyclists, should use reflective devices or tape to guarantee that they are seen by drivers. If you are dressed in dark clothes and your bike is difficult to see, reflective tape can ensure that other drivers are aware of you on the road.

2. Avoid blind spots.

Every driver has a blind spot where they can’t see part of the road in a side or rear-view mirror. If you are riding in a driver’s blind spot and they forget to check before they change lanes or turn, you may be injured in an accident. Get out of another driver’s blind spot as quickly as possible.

3. Always signal.

When you’re cruising alone on an old highway, it’s easy to forget that you don’t own the road. Just as when you are driving a vehicle, it’s important to always use your signal lights when you plan to change lanes or turn. Not only does this communicate your intention to move, but it also catches the eye of a driver in a car or truck so they can see you before it’s too late.

4. Choose bright clothing.

Bright-colored clothing is more likely to catch the eye of other drivers on the road. Rather than a neutral or black color, choose brighter clothing to protect yourself when on your bike. It’s especially important to avoid wearing black at night to ensure that you are seen.

5. Choose a visible helmet.

Eye-catching helmets will get you noticed by a driver next to you. Choose one with a bright color scheme, a Mohawk on top or a ponytail hanging out the back. The likelier you are to catch the attention of the driver, the safer you are.

Staying safe on the road means bein g aware of other drivers and ensuring that they are aware of you, but sometimes accidents can’t be avoided. An attorney can explain your rights to you if you are in an accident while on your motorcycle.
